There are pluses and minuses. Its easier for my wife to get to her precious Micky$oft, but i have to agree its buggier than a south american prison...

Worked like a champ. Why is the first user id=11 by default and the next id=11? Is this a bug with their authorization.xml template? Maybe they didn't test it with a created user during the install script? Or is this part of "ubuntu not supported"?

Crazy but thanks for posting the fix. Saved me a lot of time troubleshooting.

You can do this without stopping your running VMs too. Make the edit, then restart just the vmware management with:

/etc/init.d/vmware-mgmt restart (or distro appropriate method)

"12" does work. I am not sure why it can not pass "11", but since the bug still exists as of 2.0.1, I would recommend setting this to "12" immediately after install on new deployments to avoid the issue.

Thank you for finding out the hard part.

In response to: Quck Overview of VirtualBox 3.0 beta 2

@Toponce You're right. My apologies. :p It's really a comparison to VMWare and not really a review. At best it's an overview.

Sorry about no screen shots as I'm pretty much doing everything from the command line. And the virtual machines as headless... The only "features" I'm interested in is performance - networking + I/O performance and VM automation.

A "review" of VirtualBox 3 beta, and not a single screenshot? Not a single review of any features. All you have done is discovered a product that you find superior to VMWare. Where's the actual review?

For scripting tasks like autostart and autostop, you might take a look for vboxtool (I'm the author): http://vboxtool.sourceforge.net/

For optimal results, use the latest scripts from SVN, because there were some bug fixes for handling the newest VBox version and Ubuntu Jaunty. See http://vboxtool.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/vboxtool/trunk/script/

I am using a dedicated GPS logger right now (and GeoSetter to match). And you're right - it's a lot better and easier to do it with a GPS logger than backtracking with Google.. :D

You can also use a dedicated GPS logger device to track your location while you take photos.
I use the GPS of my iPhone 3G for that purpose. The GeoLogTag iPhone app tracks my location and afterwards geotags my photos. The effort involved for me is minimal and the result is pretty neat.

Daf is daffy!
VMware2 performs the same for me on RH5 and SLES10.2, both 64 bit. The UI is waaaay slow and I get the "Web service not available" all the time. I have aprox 48 SLES and 14 RH servers. This is the worst behaved app I have seen on Linux in a while.

Hi there,

I have a Denon 3808 that was purchased in Singapre. Where did you get your 3808 upgrade? Thanks.

I am still using VMS2 and performance with 2.6.28.x seems bad. VMs will crawl after running a few days (as evidenced by the slow speed of this blog).

I will also try to move back to 1 when possible. PITA.. :(

VMWare 2.0 doesn't get my vote either. Web UI is ill adapted, features such as auto start-up are gone or hidden. So what if performance is better, I'm going back to 1.0.x until something is done about usability.
